I ordered this based on some YouTube reviews and the reviews here at Amazon. I should have gone to the IRWIN tools website and read those reviews. This thing worked for the first ten wires of varying sizes within the 10 -24 gauge range. After that, I brought it to the jobsite to repair some electrical parts and run some longer wires and it didn’t strip AT ALL. The teeth on the “grab” side of the wire don’t have enough tension, no matter how much you adjust it so the wires just move around too much and the stripper side can’t cut consistently. The wires are a jumbled mess after using this tool and are half-stripped, chewed up and totally unusable and have to be cut. I am honestly writing this review because I can’t in good conscience recommend these as wire strippers I have been an aircraft electrician, avionics technician, and an electronics technician since 2003. It would have been nice to have such a dynamic tool at the ready which would have made my jobs a lot easier but it is too good to be true. I would recommend spending the extra money on a good set of Klein automatic strippers ($30+) or IDEAL custom strippers. The standard design of those I’m sure is made by other companies as well. Sorry IRWIN, this one is a flop.
Noticed a price drop on the IRWIN VISE-GRIP 2078300 Self-Adjusting Wire Stripper, 8″ [8-inch self-adjusting wire stripper] to .81. Free one-day shipping is available on qualifying orders.
Good price on good (wire) stripper. Bought one at much higher price a couple months ago
how small of wires can these cut?
So this is a good wire stripper? My husband used to have one like this but looked much cheaper but cost twice as much as this one.
This is an awesome wire stripper. I have one in the garage and one in the barn. They get used quite often and work great!
Great tool – bought one in 2015 but it grew legs….
I saw one at my dollar store. Does this provide any significant advantage?
Today I learned there are self adjusting strippers.
Time to upgrade the old one I had where I need to align the hole with the gauge of wire
In for ☝️ thanks
I’ve gone down as small as 22 gauge for individual cat 5 strands. sometimes it works other times it breaks the wire. The Irwins are a huge time-saver for any and all household electrical. They are solid and last forever until someone takes them on you.
I picked up a different one by Capri tools that works perfectly for cat5 and fine work that is currently .46 on
– it had been .77 through a frontpage
on Oct 19 2018.
Just noticed the Capri stripper seems to be .08 at
which seems VERY cheap.
i have the chinesium version of this (exact same everything, the OP one just has some branded coloring)
it strips wires small enough to where if you had to go smaller it would be easy enough to just pull/cut the wire sheath using fingernails
City this last time. Works fairly well
I’ve had a radio shack version of these for the past 15 years and it’s performed so well. Sadly it’s time to replace as the grips are starting to disintegrate, but I can’t stress how awesome this style of wire stripper is. I think they should call it “the instant wire stripper”
